Premise
In a post-apocalyptic world, a lone hero, Eli (Denzel Washington), guards the Book of Eli, which provides knowledge that could redeem society. The despot (Gary Oldman) of a small, makeshift town plans to take possession of the book.
Production
In May 2007, Warner Bros. signed the Hughes brothers to direct The Book of Eli, based on a script by Gary Whitta. The film is the brothers' first since From Hell in 2001. The script was subsequently rewritten by Anthony Peckham, and in September 2008, actor Denzel Washington was cast into the lead role. In the following October, Gary Oldman was cast to star alongside Washington. Filming began in February 2009 in New Mexico.
To prepare for his role Denzel Washington trained for 8 months with Bruce Lee's protege, Dan Inosanto

Release
Warner Bros. will distribute The Book of Eli in the United States and Canada, while Sony Pictures will distribute in other territories, including Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America and the majority of Asia and Eastern Europe. Alcon Entertainment is financing the film and co-producing with Silver Pictures The Book of Eli is scheduled to be released on January 15, 2010.
